Gabriel Lester and Patricia Pisters respond to Michelangelo Antonioni

The evening opens with an introduction to Antonioni”s oeuvre by Patricia Pisters (University of Amsterdam). EYE is currently devoting an exhibition to the celebrated filmmaker under the title “Michelangelo Antonioni – Il maestro del cinema moderno” which runs until 17 January 2016. The evening is in English.

Gabriel Lester (Amsterdam, 1972) makes artworks and installations that are often qualified as cinematographic without necessarily involving film or video. His works of art are implicitly narrative, explicitly visual or sometimes both at once. Under the heading 'Lingering with Antonioni' the artist wil reflect on a specific and remarkable characteristic of Antonioni's films.

Lester: 'Something special happens when we linger in a scene and observe how characters and locations become self-absorbed and self-aware. In cinema the term is used when the camera maintains pointed at the subject or object and continues to record, beyond the action or dialogue of the scene. As we remain, we observe how that what has just occurred is digested, reflected upon and dissolve into its surrounding. This kind of lingering is one of the most inspiring and impressive aspects of Antonioni”s films.'
