Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, A
Ana Lily Amirpour / US, 2014 / 99 min.
A girl is roaming the dark corners of Bad City. Dressed in a hijab and a striped t-shirt and avoiding the light of the street lamps, she is haunting the people of her town, showing her vampire teeth when she has to. Which is just as well, because Bad City got its name for a reason. It’s a lawless dump, peopled by thugs, addicts and pimps.

One night as she is walking home alone, she meets Arash, an Iranian James Dean lookalike down to the classical American car and the perennial cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth. The two hit it off at once.
This is a film which would be hard to pin down to one single genre. It”s an appealing blend of spaghetti western, vampire film, Lynch and graphic novel – it is also a film exhibiting an electrifying combination of Iranian and American influences. The extremely stylish black and white images are underscored by fusion beats, Iranian undergroud rock and the occasional western riff in the time-honoured tradition of Morricone. An instant cult hit is born. (International Film Festival Rotterdam)
