Go Go Tales
Abel Ferrara / IT, US, 2007 / 105 min.
Archetypal independent filmmaker Abel Ferrara made a film portrait of an oldskool strip club in Manhattan, run by a debt-ridden Ray Ruby. Ruby keeps on believing in a better future: Willem Dafoe has a stellar role in this sharp-edged comedy.
A free adaptation of John Cassavetes’ seldom-shown classic The Killing of a Chinese Bookie? Not many directors would dare take this on, but if your name is Abel Ferrara and you’ve spent forty years on the exploitation and independent circuit and you make films like you think they should be made, you’ll take on anything.
Just like Catalan filmmaker/artist Albert Serra – who chose this film – Ferrara is interested in stories where the characters transcend themselves while in the grip of unconscious desires and urges. Go Go Tales, Ferrara’s ‘first deliberate comedy’ is also a portrait of a New York that has almost disappeared, and brims with typically American optimism: Ray is on a hiding to nothing, but rates his chances.
