Hlynur Palmason / DK, IS, FR, SE, 2022 / 143 min.

Hlynur Pálmason, director of Godland, grew up on Iceland and studied in Denmark. His film about a Danish priest experiencing a religious crisis on Iceland in the late 19th century is, to a certain extent, a reflection on his own identity.

Lucas, a young Danish priest, is sent to Iceland by the ecclesiastical authorities to start a parish and photograph the local population. Both not a done deal in the late 19th century. Physical hardship, his guide Ragnar’s hostility and a doomed love affair make Lucas' mission a true journey to hell and it remains to be seen whether any salvation is forthcoming.
