Gohatto

Nagisa Oshima / JP, FR, 1999 / 100 min.

When the young samurai Kano is accepted into an elite group, he immediately turns the heads of his fellow warriors due to his astounding beauty. In memory of Ryuichi Sakamoto who wrote the music for this film. Will be screened during ADE 2023.

poster Gohatto (Taboo) (Nagisa Ōshima, JP/FR 1999)
Director Nagisa Oshima’s swansong. It was in his Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) that Ryuichi Sakamoto once debuted as both film composer and actor. Gohatto has a number of interesting parallels with Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Both films are about attraction between men in environments that ostensibly provide no room for this: in Merry Christmas at a prisoner of war camp and, in Gohatto, among a hierarchic group of elite samurai where the arrival of a stunningly beautiful youth causes tensions and impetuous emotions.
