The fate of the two Japanese orphans is announced from the start. The young Seita dies of starvation at a railway station, entirely alone. His story starts: “21 September 1945 was the day I died”. Before that, he tried to survive in a cave with his little sister after running away from their cold aunt who won’t let them be children.
