Herz aus Glas
Werner Herzog / DE, 1976 / 94 min.
You could say that Herz aus Glas is a dark allegory about the fate the human race repeatedly brings down upon itself. But this is also a disruptive experiment with form. "A film that arose by itself, from itself ", as Herzog himself has said.
The only man who knows how to make ruby red glass takes his secret to the grave, leaving a village in Bavaria around 1800 in disarray. Work at the glass factory grinds to a halt, and the entire population of the village lapses into a kind of somnambulism. The son of the aged factory owner decides to do whatever it takes to get his hands on the secret to the process. In the meantime, visionary shepherd Hias predicts not only the downfall of the village and its factory, but also the horrors that await the country in a still far-off future.
