The Coriolis Effect
Petr Lom / NL, 2025 / 110 min.
The wind and ocean determine the lives of humans and animals on the volcanic Cape Verdes islands. You need determination to live there. Visually overwhelming documentary with enchanting music provided by renowned Cape Verdean composer Vasco Martins.

The Cape Verdes archipelago is situated out in the Atlantic where the hurricanes are born that annually terrorise the Caribbean and the USA. The islands have few resources. Whether you are a goat, tortoise or human: if you want to build a life there or create new life you will have to display vitality.
Prelude
Preceding The Coriolis Effect is the 2017 short film Hybrids (6 minutes) by Florian Brauch, Matthieu Pujol, Kim Tailhades, Yohan Thireau, and Romain Thirion. What if animals one day merge with our waste? Fish and birds can't survive long now that the oceans have turned into a plastic soup. Perhaps a car shark, a bottle cap crab, and an airplane squid would be more resilient to all the pollution. Hybrids gives us a glimpse of this bizarre future.
