Home Movie Day 2023: 100 years of 9,5mm
During Home Movie Day, we celebrate one hundred years of the 9.5mm cine film format. The screenings will be analogue, on special projection equipment, with a live piano accompaniment. Free entrance.

The 9.5mm format is also known as neuf-cinq and Pathé-Baby: the first format for the home cinema market: Le cinéma chez soi. Film restorer Brigitte Paulowitz will be showing archival and amateur films from the Lichtspiel/ Kinemathek Bern collection, accompanied live on the piano by Martin de Ruiter. In her presentation, she will talk about aspects such as the breadth of the range offered by the Pathé catalogue in the early period 1922/23, the Pathécolor process and stencil coloring, as well as the practice of screening and development for this special format.
Ole Schepp and Harry Bruno, filmmakers and board members of the Netherlands Association Cine-9.5, will then screen a selection from their own film collection on a Heurtier projector. Naturally, they will also devote attention to making and projecting films in this format.
Home Movie Day in Eye Filmmuseum is our international homage to the amateur filmmaker, organised around the same date annually since 2002. During this free-admission edition, we celebrate 100 years of amateur filmmaking. In 1923 – exactly one hundred years ago – the first successful film cameras with which amateurs could make films were launched: the Ciné-Kodak 16mm and the Pathé Baby 9.5mm.
The presentations are in English (Brigitte Paulowitz) and Dutch.
