Ninotchka, with Greta Garbo in the comical title role and Ernst Lubitsch in the director”s seat, is rightfully regarded as an outright classic, especially thanks to Lubitsch”s talent for sophisticated comedy and Billy Wilder”s brilliantly sharp dialogues. The film was promoted with the tagline: 'Garbo laughs!'.
Lubitsch” first great success after Trouble in Paradise (1932) was nominated for four Oscars, including an Oscar for Best Actress (Garbo) and Best Script. The film was restored by EYE in 2007.
Screened in 35mm (from Eye”s collection)
