Shula is a nine-year-old orphan in Zambia. Out of the blue one day she is accused of witchcraft and gets sent away to a witch camp that doubles as a tourist attraction. Shula also appears in TV shows to display her magic powers. Rungano Nyoni’s feature film debut premiered at Cannes where it was received as a mix of satire, social criticism and feminist allegory.
The film premiered in the Director”s Fortnight programme at Cannes (a platform for new discoveries) and featured in the selections of numerous film festivals, from Toronto to the Movies That Matter Festival in Amsterdam.
