Il bidone
Federico Fellini / IT, FR, 1955 / 91 min.
Dark, neo-realist, mildly comedic crime drama about a lonely fraudster forced to witness the consequences of his misdeeds. Fellini's unjustifiably forgotten, yet brilliant drama is one of Ethan Coen’s favourite films.

Il bidone is the central film in Fellini's Trilogy of Loneliness, flanked by La strada and Le notti di Cabiria, and has long been underappreciated. This neo-realist crime drama follows an aging fraudster who cunningly uses the desperation of the poor and gullible, yet is now forced to experience the consequences of his life choices. Fellini masterfully intertwines humanity, humour and pathos in this piercing moral tragedy; featuring the magnificent acting of, among others, Giuletta Masina.
