Xavier Giannoli / FR, BE, 2021 / 151 min.
In this French costume drama a young, unknown poet in 19th-century France sets out to try his luck in Paris. But he soon finds out that money and pretence are all that count. This film adaptation of the Honoré de Balzac’s book shows a society where anything and everything can be bought and sold.

Lucien (Benjamin Voisin) is a young poet in the French countryside, and he has big plans. He’s going to try his luck in Paris, with help from his noblewoman patron (Cécile de France). However, once in that overwhelming city he soon has to fall back on his own resources. He finds out that, behind the façade, money and pretence are the real powers. A reputation is as fragile as the soul. Lucien will love, and he will suffer. But will his illusions remain intact?
