I'm Still Here
Walter Salles / BR, FR, 2024 / 139 min.
Walter Salles (Central do Brasil, The Motorcycle Diaries) has returned to directing fiction films after a long absence, and promptly picked up the Audience Award at IFFR. He tells the crushing, true story of a mother forced to reinvent herself under the military dictatorship in Brazil. Three Oscar nominations too.

Walter Salles based this film on the memoires of Marcelo Rubens Paiva, whose father Rubens Paiva – a member of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies – disappeared during the military dictatorship in Brazil in the 1970s. Following the disappearance, the lives of Marcelo, his mother Eunice (played superbly by Fernanda Torres) and her four other children are transformed, abruptly and forever.
