Imagine - Human, Space, Time and Human

Ki-Duk Kim / KR, 2018 / 122 min.

A group of people is travelling on an old-fashioned steel ship. Amongst them a senator, some prostitutes, a newly-wed couple and a group of gangsters. It’s not long before tensions flare up, and when the ship turns out to be hovering in the clouds on the second day and the food starts running out, the situation becomes unsustainable. Korean master Kim Ki-duk blends a pitch-black world view with lyrical beauty.

Human space time human

Anyone familiar with the work of Korean director Kim Ki-duk knows that his view of the world is not exactly joyful. His newest film is a parable that shows how quickly the thin layer of civilisation cracks as soon as some pressure is applied. Nothing new there, but what”s extraordinary about this film is that Kim combines the raw violence he is known for with a lyrical beauty. In the last part, the ship becomes a fantasy world that is a far cry from the vessel with which the film began. But Kim wouldn”t be Kim if he didn”t have worthy finale up his sleeve as well.
