After mainly working as a TV screenwriter in the sixties, Larry Cohen decides to take matters into his own hands in the seventies and becomes a director and producer. With New York as his working area, he primarily makes a name for himself with successful blaxploitation and horror films, often shot on location without the necessary permits. Juicy anecdotes abound in this extremely entertaining documentary about one of the last of the B-movie authors.

Larry Cohen (born in 1941) has never been too bothered by rules and regulations. When a taxi had to drive over the sidewalk of a busy New York street for the blaxploitation classic Black Caesar (1973), he made it happen without a permit. Equally unannounced was the hail of bullet casings on unsuspecting passers-by during the filming of Q: The Winged Serpent (1982). Every person speaking in this documentary, from Traci Lords to Martin Scorsese, is full of admiration for the filmmaker”s guerrilla approach. All of this doesn”t alter the fact that Cohen was, and still is, above all a highly inventive writer. Luckily that aspect of his talent is extensively focused on as well.
