Imagine - The Cured

Ireland is recovering from a deadly virus, with 75% of the affected cured. Senan is one of them and placed with his sister-in-law Abbie, who lost her husband during the plague. He tries to find a normal life pattern, but the arrival of his old pal Conor brings back gruesome memories. Ambitious take on the zombie genre infuses its story with psychological depth as well as political meaning.

The Cured offers an interesting and gritty take on the zombie theme that recalls such films as 28 Days Later and Children of Men. Its visceral, realistic style gives the plague some serious gravity. While it strongly resonates with the refugee crisis in Europe, on a more personal level it deals with forgiveness, identity and accepting the past. The casting is superb. Sam Keeley is outstanding as guilt-ridden Senan. Maybe even better is Ellen Page as Abbie, a journalist, balancing between empathy, anxiety, righteousness, insatiable anger and despair. It”s the superbly acted human story at heart that truly carries the film.
