Imagine - The Hole in the Ground
Lee Cronin / IE, 2018 / 90 min.
A mother is disturbed by her son in a creepy, suspenseful horror that plays on every parent’s greatest fear.

Sarah has fled a bad marriage and retreats to a remote house with her young son Chris. One day, she encounters a wide crater-like hole in the ground. After the incident and the death of a neighbour, Chris starts to develop strange behaviour. Or could it be that medication got Sarah hallucinating? Creepy, suspenseful horror plays on every parent”s greatest fear.
In his first feature, Lee Cronin shows off his skills in creating suspense and creepiness, even as the relationship between all parts of his story remains unclear for most of the film. He also leaves the viewer in uncertainty whether something is really wrong with Chris or that it is all in the mind of Sarah, a woman who clearly has mental health issues of her own. Both leads are excellent and James Quinn Markey gives Chris something seriously unsettling.
Like The Prodigy and Hereditary, this film is playing on a parent's greatest fear: looking at your child and not knowing who he is.
