Italian for Beginners (Dogma 95)
Lone Scherfig / DK, 2000 / 108 min.
Thirty years ago, Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg signed their Dogme 95 manifesto, a call for ‘authentic cinema’. Lone Scherfig’s Italian for Beginners – seven world-weary Danes go on a trip to Italy – is one of the classics of the movement.

A young priest arrives in a dreary suburb of a Danish city seeking to inject new enthusiasm into the local congregation. But, no one visits his church. To come into contact with his parishioners, the priest signs up for a course in Italian, where he meets six sombre, world-weary fellow students. These lonely souls get to know one another during a trip to Venice.
