The History of the Future

The History of the Future: Joanna Hogg and Tilda Swinton in Conversation

Actress Tilda Swinton in conversation with British film director Joanna Hogg on how their lives, and in particular the relationships between mothers and daughters, have influenced the stories of the films they have made together, such as The Souvenir and The Eternal Daughter.

Joanna Hogg (1960) is a British film director and screenwriter. She made her directing and screenwriting debut with Unrelated in 2007. In 2019, 2021 and 2022 she worked with Tilda Swinton on The Souvenir, The Souvenir Part II and The Eternal Daughter respectively. Two of Hogg’s films made the Sight & Sound’s poll of Greatest Films of All Time and were nominated for the British Independent Film Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards. Her films have also received nominations at the Berlinale.

For the exhibition Tilda Swinton – Ongoing in Eye, Swinton and Joanna Hogg present Flat 19, a multimedia reconstruction of her 1980s London flat and an exploration of memory, space and personal history. Tilda Swinton sees their joint project The Eternal Daughter (2022) as one of her most important films. In this film, she plays both an alter ego of Hogg in middle age, and her aged mother – both are spending a few days’ holiday in a hotel. Their relationship is complex: simultaneously intimate and reserved. The film is completely improvised by Swinton playing two roles at the same time – an unparalleled achievement.

Joanna Hogg Retrospective

From 8 January through 4 February, Eye will highlight the oeuvre of British photographer, screenwriter, and filmmaker Joanna Hogg. During these four weeks, all of Joanna Hogg's films will be screened. 27 January, Hogg will be present for a special evening dedicated to her working methods, inspirations, and collaborations will take place. Using excerpts from her films, ranging from her earliest (previously unseen) cinematic experiments to her most contemporary work, recurring themes in her work will be explored. Her first and last short films will also be screened.

Unfortunately, demand for tickets exceeded availability and this Conversation is now sold out. For those unable to attend in person, all Conversations are recorded and can be watched back for free on the Eye Film Player after the event. Conversations that took place earlier are already available there.
