Kasaba
Nuri Bilge Ceylan / TR, 1997 / 83 min.
This brilliant, modest drama follows three generations of a family from a small Turkish city, seen through the eyes of the children. In all its simplicity, Kasaba captures the essence of humanity. Pure cinema.

In all its simplicity, Kasaba is able in just a short time to capture the essence of mankind. With cinematic precision and powerful, expressive framing, Nuri Bilge Ceylan achieves a feat of pure cinema: a camera, a few people, landscapes and sounds are all Ceylan needs to create his world.
Majestic
The actors in this, his debut film, are mainly Ceylan’s friends and family members. The screenplay is based on the real-life story of his sister; the location is the village in Anatolia where he grew up. Kasaba was shot in black-and-white on a small budget and with a crew of just two, and evokes an intimate atmosphere, as simple and majestic as life itself.

Eye Filmmuseum presents the first Dutch exhibition devoted to the work of acclaimed Turkish filmmaker and photographer Nuri Bilge Ceylan. For this occasion, the museum is bringing together his prize-winning films and lesser-known landscape photographs for the very first time. That combination reveals not only Ceylan’s masterly photographic eye and sense of composition, but also the deeply compassionate way he explores universal themes from a Turkish perspective.
