In cooperation with poet and filmmaker Lemuël de Graav, the filmmuseum is organising a programme on the eve of Keti Koti (‘The Chains Broken’), the commemoration of the (official) abolition of slavery in Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles in 1863.

This two-hour programme is a collaboration between young filmmakers, choreographers and musicians including Alida Dors, Donna Chittick and saxophonist Romana de Meneges. Your host for the event is Audilla Voorn (a.k.a. Femmetastic), who will also conduct the Q&As with the directors. Eye Filmmuseum’s director Bregtje van der Haak will give a welcome speech.

    R.I.O.T. (Hesdy Lonwijk, 2023, 19’)

R.I.O.T. investigates the mechanisms behind an uprising through a blending together of dance, film and music. How do people become caught within the system? How can a group amplify the voice of the outcast? How can sistership and brotherhood be brought about in times of increasing polarisation? Hope is the power to give wings and direction to the future.

The Story of Ne Kuko (Festus Toll, 2023, 25')

In this exceptionally formed documentary, Festus Toll illuminates the story of the Congolese Chief Ne Kuko, who was met by a Belgian trading expedition around 1878. Not only was land stolen from Ne Kuko, but also his ‘nkisi’: an object with spiritual powers. A century and a half later, the nkisi is still awaiting its return from the Africa Museum. Pan-African activist Mwazulu decides to intervene.
