KinoTalk: Abroad – Diaspora Across Generations
The new KinoTalk season kicks off with a very special evening. The film Abrokyire-Abroad will be followed by a live discussion of migration, identity and family with the filmmakers and special guests. Afterwards, drinks and a DJ.

In Abrokyire-Abroad, we follow maker Kimberley Agyarko-Obeng as she returns to Ghana, the country of her birth, after eighteen years away. She moved to the Netherlands at the age of ten, and her family remains divided across two countries and two cultures. This schism forms the starting point for a personal, poetic documentary on growing up between cultures, and the search for what ‘home’ means.
On the basis of diary excerpts and intimate conversations with her parents, Kimberley reflects on the impact of migration on family. The film deals with identity, homecoming and intergenerational transmission: what do we take on from our parents, what remains unspoken and how do these stories – or silences – shape who we are?
About the makers
Kimberley Agyarko-Obeng is an actor and theatre-maker. Her work revolves around telling bicultural, underrepresented stories. She investigates themes such as migration, identity and voice from the perspective of her Ghanaian-Dutch background, often at the intersection of film, theatre and personal narration. Abrokyire-Abroad is her most personal project to date.
The film was made in cooperation with visual artist and documentary maker Isaura Sanwirjatmo. Her work moves between fiction and non-fiction and combines documentary with performance and pop culture. Her films focus on vulnerability, identity and humanity – elements that are also palpable in Abrokyire-Abroad.
