Christophe Hermans / BE, 2021 / 81 min.

Director Christophe Hermans spent ages bashing his head against a plan for a film about his relationship with his mother. When he came across the novel La ruche by Arthur Loustalot, about a dysfunctional family consisting of a mother and her three daughters, everything fell into place.

'Ruche' means beehive, the symbolic name of the apartment in the fiction feature debut by Walloon documentary maker Christophe Hermans. Mother Alice lives here with her three daughters, but her borderline disorder means that normal family life is all but impossible. As the father is absent, all responsibility falls on the shoulders of eldest daughter Marion, who is pushed into an impossible dilemma: caring for her mother and sisters versus her longing for freedom.
