La saison des hommes
Moufida Tlatli / FR, TN, 2000 / 120 min.
Drama about the fate of Tunisian women, who are trapped between strict traditional morals and the lure of modern life.

“I am the man, I’m in charge, not you”, Tunisian Said (Ezzedine Guennoun) tells his wife Aicha (Rabiaa Ben Abdallah). This is however readily apparent to viewers and definitely to Aicha. Despite Said’s disapproval, Aicha returns to the island of Djerba from Tunis, where she is convinced her autistic son will fare better. Once she arrives, she has flashbacks to when she was first with Said. Back then, she was subjugated by her mother-in-law and Said only spent one month a year on the island, during 'The Season of Men', primarily to propagate male offspring.
