Lang leve de koningin
Esmé Lammers / NL, 1995 / 118 min.
Eight-year-old Sara has just learned to play chess. In her lively imagination the white queen comes to life and she herself ends up in the game. Heartwarming children’s film featuring Monique van de Ven and Jack Wouterse– winner of a Golden Calf at the Netherlands Film Festival.

Eight-year-old Sara is obsessed with chess after a friend taught her the basics. Because she has a lively imagination, she thinks the white chess pieces, particularly the queen (Van de Ven) and the king (Wouterse) are teaching her. The queen devised the game for the king who was bored because there were no wars to fight. In her mind, Sara plays along with the chess game. Ultimately, she becomes so good that she gets to take part in a simultaneous exhibition against a grand master.
