He lambasted the Cannes Film Festival as a hopelessly bourgeois institute in the sixties,  but it did not stop him from frequently premiering his latest films there.  Godard’s most recent production, the essay film Livre d’images, also premiered at Cannes. In this film, too, the now 88-year-old filmmaker's social criticism is packaged in lucid film collages and text clips.
