Le quattro volte
Michelangelo Frammartino / CH, DE, IT, 2010 / 88 min.
In the countryside of southern Italy, an elderly shepherd passes his final days with his goats in the hills of Calabria. Frammartino (Il Buco, Il Dono) films the four stages of life, without any dialogue, in a surprisingly comedic, surreal style.

Le quattro volte ('four times') tells the stories of four 'protagonists': an elderly shepherd in the final days of his life; the birth and first weeks in the life of a goat, until his first time at pasture beneath the olive trees; the life of an ancient chestnut tree as the seasons change; and the transformation of the old chestnut into charcoal.
