Les misérables
Ladj Ly / FR, 2019 / 102 min.
Ladj Ly situated his protest film in the same banlieu that was the setting for Victor Hugo’s famous novel Les Misérables. In this police drama Ly mainly draws on his recollections of the 2005 riots that scourged Paris. Ly’s feature film debut won the European Film Award. Chosen by Ivo van Hove.

Stage director Ivo van Hove: “This film influenced my new version of West Side Story, in particular the 20-minute finale: an explosion of fury in extreme violence.”
