Leven aan de Rand

Born from collaborative efforts of the local food bank, a community support centre, the Salvation Army and the local Protestant Church, the Social Market is a place where clients can not only pick up free groceries, but can also get help, find a listening ear, a smile and feel a sense of belonging.

Working as a volunteer at the so-called Social Grocery Store, documentary filmmaker Netty van Hoorn was impressed by the atmosphere, the solidarity and the reasons that bring people to the Social Market. She decided to document it using her iPhone.

Living on the edge is a human voice against prejudice and coldness. It is proof that solidarity still exists, irrespective of background, culture or ethnicity. By sharing the stories from inside, the film fosters recognition, understanding and connection – a crucial force to counter today’s frequent harsh commentary and chilly political winds. The documentary is a much-needed voice at a time when empathy seems so scarce.
