At first glance Jiro, Taeko and six-year-old Keita are an ordinary family. Their home on the Japanese coast is small but cosy, and Jiro's parents live close by in an apartment across the street. But if you look closely, the reality is much more complex. For example, Taeko has brought the child from her previous marriage to deaf Korean Park. And Jiro's parents have difficulty accepting that their son is living with a divorced mother. On Jiro's father’s birthday of all days, an accident happens that takes Keita’s life. His biological father then reappears, claiming his role in the tragedy.
