Mário
Billy Woodberry / PT, FR, 2024 / 120 min.
Documentary that chronicles the life of Mário Pinto de Andrade (1928–1990), the Angolan poet, intellectual, and revolutionary. As a founding member of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), de Andrade played a pivotal role in African anti-colonial struggles during the 1960s and 1970s.

Mário delves into his pan-African activism, diplomatic endeavors, and literary contributions, highlighting his unwavering commitment to African sovereignty and the complexities of post-independent nation-building.
Billy Woodberry, a prominent figure in the L.A. Rebellion film movement, brings a decidedly pan-African perspective to the documentary, aligning with de Andrade's own vision of international solidarity. By intertwining archival footage, photographs, and interviews, Mário crafts a nuanced portrait de Andrade that not only honors his legacy, but also prompts reflection on the broader challenges faced by independence movements. The documentary serves as a vital historical record, shedding light on the intellectual foundations of African independence movements and the enduring quest for genuine liberation beyond the attainment of political sovereignty.
Mário had its Dutch premiere at the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in 2024, where it was featured in the festival's Harbour section. This screening at the Africadelic Festival 2025 marks the Amsterdam premiere of the film. The film will be introduced by Salvador Allende Jesus, who has been serving as the Consul General of Angola in Rotterdam since 2023. As Consul General, he is one of the initiators of Casa de Angola, a cultural house and community platform dedicated to showcasing Angola’s rich and diverse culture in the Netherlands.
