Mary and Max
Adam Elliot / AU, 2009 / 93 min.
Re-release of Adam Elliot’s witty, much-lauded claymation (2009) about the pen friendship between eight-year-old Mary from Melbourne and Max, a 44-year-old New Yorker with Asperger’s syndrome. The two discuss everything, attempting to find their places in a world they both have trouble understanding.

Mary lives in Melbourne’s suburbs and has a lot of questions her alcoholic mother doesn’t answer, in Mary’s opinion. Where do babies come from, for example? Surely you don’t find them at the bottom of a pint glass like Mary’s grandfather says? Mary picks a name from the New York phone book and starts writing to Max, a man with Asperger’s syndrome who leads a reclusive life.
