George Anthony Morton is a classical painter and Afro-American. He developed his talent for painting while serving a ten-year prison sentence for drug-dealing. Having become the first Black artist to graduate from New York’s Florence Academy of Art, he tries to navigate his way through the white art world. He returns to Kansas City to restore his disrupted relationship with his family – mainly his mother. He hopes that painting portraits of his family members in the style of an Old Master he greatly admires, Rembrandt, will help him come to terms with the past.
