What is motherhood? Maternal is set within the confines of an Italian Catholic refuge for young expectant mothers in Buenos Aires. There, the two forms of mother hood – the single mother and the holy mother – regularly come into conflict.
Sister Paola is an Italian nun on the verge of taking her vows. Luciana is a teen mom struggling to take care of her daughter. Fatima, another teen with a young son, is pregnant with her second child. All three have difficulty with motherhood’s implications.
