Director Vladlena Sandu was six when her family moved from Crimea to Grozny, in Chechnya. In 1994, war broke out with Russia. Sandu transformed her war memories into a poetic film full of lyrical, political and surrealist imagery.
The filmmaker reminisces about her youth. She wants an answer to the fundamental question: how can the cycle of violence that shapes so many children and is generational be stopped?
Special screening
A special screening of Memory will take place on Thursday, July 30. Harm Haverman from Save the Children will give an introduction before the film, and the screening will conclude with a post-film discussion between director Vladlena Sandu and film critic Hugo Emmerzael. Language: English.
