Polish Elzbieta has been caring for her elderly mother for a few years. After her mother’s death, her only child, Marta, travels to Lodz from Amsterdam to help clear out the home. During that tas kit becomes apparent the task of carer has moved up a generation. Who will later care for Elzbieta? The physical distance between mother and daughter makes it hard to express these expectations for the future.

Daughter Rite (Michelle Citron, US, 1978, 53')

This milestone in feminist cinema wanders the minefield of mother-daughter relations. Michelle Citron innovatively reveals the daughter’s complex emotions of suffocation, anger and love towards her mother. Daughter Rite is based on 40 interviews and group discussions about women’s experiences with their mothers.

Two sisters unravel some family secrets, reminiscing about their mother who read their diaries, listened in on their telephone conversations and generally ruined their attempts at independence. This footage alternates with scenes from Michelle Citron’s own family’s home movies.

Citron’s innovative structure was inspired by Chicago’s feminist community, many of whom were members of Films By Women/Chicago ‘74. The result is an astounding, visual film on a timeless subject and which, as Citron emphasises, “was very meaningful in my own life and has become equally important to the feminist movement”.

Distributor Feministisch Filmkollektief Cinemien was groundbreaking when it came to increasing the visibility of female filmmakers and released this film at the time.
