Talentscreening: The Darker The Berry, The Sweeter The Song

MovieZone presents Talentscreening: The Darker The Berry, The Sweeter The Song

How has oppression shaped the evolution of Black music? From the ’60s to now, music has developed as both an artform and a social and political instrument. With films, drinks and music from DJ Aline.

Much of the music we listen to these days is rooted in resistance, identity and the formation of communities. This evening, Noëlle van Russel and Eliona Umuhoza will take us on a deep dive into the history and impact of Black music.

Films

The programme consists of a selection of exceptional films and clips, including 50 jaar Hip Hop in Nederland: Iemand moet het doen Niemandsland (2025) by Ivan Barbosa and Sacha Vermeulen, and will have a focus on women in the Dutch hip hop scene. We are also screening Louis van Gasteren’s Jazz & Poetry (1964), a classic from the Eye collection in which poet Ted Joans shares perspectives oscillating between New York, Africa and Europe.

The film programme closes with The Fifth Wall (2026) by Meshach Boye, a cinematic EP combining music and images to weave a personal story of dreams, reality and the field of tension in-between. The film gives us an insight into the inner world of creatives who grew up in environments such as Amsterdam’s Zuidoost district, where creativity goes hand-in-hand with obstacles, but also resilience and ambition.

Discussion, drinks and music

The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion with Meshach Boye and Noell3. Noell3 is known for her authentic rap style, and is a distinctive voice in the hip hop scene in the Netherlands. During the discussion, they will reflect on the films, the history of Black music, and their own experiences within this cultural landscape.

The film evening marks the conclusion of Talentscreening, MovieZone’s talent development programme, where you’ll be able to see and hear what the participants in this programme have been working intensively towards all this time.

The evening closes with drinks and music from DJ Aline.
