According to Chinese artist and filmmaker Lei Lei (36), the members of his generation are not interested in history. For his light-footed, slightly surreal animated documentary, Lei Lei interviewed his father and grandfather, victims of Mao’s Cultural Revolution.
With the Great Leap Forward (1958-1962) and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Mao sought to force his country to take a giant step forwards: in the 1950s by drawing up a Five-Year Plan for accelerated industrialisation and increasing agricultural yields (collectivisation); in the 1960s by breathing new life into the idea of constantly renewing Socialist Revolution.
