No Dogs or Italians Allowed
Alain Ughetto / FR, IT, CH, 2022 / 70 min.
Alain Ughetto made this moving, ingenious stop-motion animation about the lives of his forebears, immigrants from the once poverty-stricken Piemonte, a mountainous area in the north-west of Italy. The director explains: “I used broccoli as trees, charcoal for the mountains and sugar lumps as bricks”.
‘Where did my surname originate?’ Alain Ughetto sometimes wondered. His father told him about the village of Ughettera, in the Piemonte region, a mountainous area in north-western Italy “where everyone is called Ughetto”.
Pre screening
Before No Dogs or Italians Allowed you will see the short film Parcelpaedia (14') by Marina Sulima. This 2020 film shows how large groups of people left Moldova more than twenty years ago, around the turn of the millennium and the ruble crisis. Many people emigrated to Italy. Many of them went to work illegally as badante, home carers, often in the home of older people. Almost all of them sent packages to their families back home. Thousands of packages still arrive every week. Doctor Cara examines these packages for symptoms of care, love and loneliness.
