Nosferatu
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau / DEUZE, 1921 / 64 min.
German actor Max Schreck’s unforgettable role in this adaptation of the gothic novel 'Dracula' set the tone for the new subgenre: the vampire films. Olga Pashchenko’s passionate piano playing makes the memorable images even more intense.

Horror and romance in this German 'Dracula' adaptation. F.W. Murnau translocated Bram Stoker’s story from England to the fictional Baltic Sea town of Wisborg interlarding it with elements typical of Weimar cinema. Highly dramatic archetypes capitalise on the collective revulsion at avarice and corruption, the fear of deadly epidemics and the dangers of suppressing erotic desires. The romantic and the macabre alternate in both the images and music.
