Occupied City
Steve McQueen / NL, GB, 2023 / 266 min.
Steve McQueen (Oscar for 12 Years a Slave) has made a monumental film following everyday life in Amsterdam under Nazi occupation. By showing the streets, canals and squares as they are today, he reveals the gulf between past and present, to devastating effect. In this English version, Melanie Hyams provides the voice-over.
The past clashes with our present in Steve McQueen’s daring documentary Occupied City (De bezette stad), inspired by Bianca Stigter’s book Atlas van een Bezette Stad. Amsterdam 1940-1945. McQueen creates two interlocking portraits: one shows the Nazi occupation that still stalks the city from door to door, while the other is a lively journey through recent years marked by pandemic and protest.
