Panoramic Visions: International Partners

Cinedans TOUR travels around the world every year. In this screening, we present three of our regular international partners: Jumping Frames, presented by CCDC (City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong), ScreenDance Miami Festival and Dance On Screen Zurich. Discover the uniqueness of each festival through a variety of dance films from different corners of the world. The screening will be accompanied by Elysa Wendi (curator of Jumping Frames), Yuri Ng (Artistic Director of CCDC), Andrea Boll (artistic director of Dance On Screen Switzerland) and Pioneer Winter (director of ScreenDance Miami). Jumping Frames – Hong Kong International Movement-image Festival Jumping Frames has been presented by the City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) since 2004. It’s the only festival of its kind in Asia, committed to promoting the intersections between performance making and moving image, cine-choreographic interventions and the body. ScreenDance Miami highlights choreographers and directors who are working with emerging and new concepts in movement and dance on film. The festival has been created to support professionals in this field and to support the development of dance created for the camera. ScreenDance Miami seeks to engage the public and bring to light an understanding of this adventuresome, exciting art form. Dance On Screen offers multifaceted, unforgettable dance film experiences, with short dance films and documentaries that present dance on screen within different cultures and contexts. Dance movies that thoughtfully illuminate political and social topics are just as well represented as pure poetic dance movies. Dance On Screen presents dance film programs around Switzerland every year.

Lake Skate (Directors: Stephanie Olbort, David Brachmann | Choreographers: Stephanie Olbort) | CH | 2022 | 15’)

Four professional figure skaters, accustomed to gliding only on perfectly groomed artificial ice, return to the origin of ice; naturally frozen water. This experience of nature is central in the film and shows what we are gradually losing due to climate change.

Unleash (Director: Sean Wirz | CH | 2020 |7’)

Five perfect strangers meet in the middle of the night and break into an abandoned house. Are they occupiers? Vandals? Far from it! They are in need to free themselves from the shackles of everyday life. It is not a break-in, but a break-out! And so it begins. The five withdraw and start their individual ritual. Their lust can be felt, their power is contagious. No one can stop what has been unleashed.

Gimp Gait (Director: Pioneer Winter, Tabatha Mudra | Choreographer: Pioneer Winter | US | 2016 | 5’)

Gimp Gait is a solo for two – surrogates to one another. It includes an exploration of the subjects' private and public lives and how the perspective of the viewer may attempt to control or shape who they are. The title of the film discloses its origin: 'gimp', a slur meant to mark a weak or handicapped person and 'gait', the manner or style of a person's walk. Can you notice every part of their bodies – both the similarities and differences?

HOW TO: Oh, look at me (Director: GeoVanna Gonzalez | Choreographers: Alondra Balbuena, Cheina Ramos | US | 2021 | 12’)

HOW TO: Oh, look at me features four femmes of color. Two dancers and two poets interact with one another through words and movement, seeking reprieve from the constructs of our current reality. Revolving around a deconstructed playground, an installation designed by director and multidisciplinary artist GeoVanna Gonzalez.

D3C05 (Director: Blaze Gonzalez, Hannah Gaengler | Choreographer: Liony Garcia | US | 2021 | 4’)

D3C05 is a sci-fi love letter to Miami’s Art Deco architecture. The film takes the idea of optimistic futurism and reimagines the concept within a neo-human world, where the boundaries between human, nature, and object coalesce; a world where synesthetic communication and performative rituals reign.

Mountain, Seas, Panorama (Director: Wilfred Wong | Choreographer: Blue Ka Wing | HK | 2023 | 35’ [World Première])

Based on the legendary Chinese folktale Kua-fu Chases the Sun in the scripture of Mountain and Sea from 4th century BC. As in the legend, the film, employing the language of dance, tells the wondrous story of a modern man on a daring quest to chase the sun. When the enigmatic creatures depicted in the book begin to infiltrate his dreams, he suspects that he has crossed paths with them.
