Ulrich Seidl’s bittersweet look at love’s detours at a strict dieting camp in the mountains. This time around, a darkly-humorous look at unrequited love instead of the usual confrontation.
Paradies: Hoffnung sees the return of Melanie, Teresa’s 13-year-old daughter who we first met in Paradies: Liebe. While her mother is in Keyna, the overweight Melanie spends her holiday at a strict, forlorn dieting camp in the mountains, where she falls in love with an older doctor. This camp leader feels really guilty as he is conscious of how impossible this romance is.
Ulrich Seidl: "Paradise does not refer to the setting of the action, but rather, like for the other two parts of the trilogy, to the longing for it. The film describes the dreams and desires of young girls entering puberty regarding love, life and their expectations of sexuality. Insecure because she is overweight, Melanie, the film's protagonist, believes that her physical appearance is the reason for the failure of her first, great love for a man."
