Hélène is a university lecturer who lives alone with her little son in Paris. When she meets a married Russian diplomat, she decides to embark on an all-consuming affair with him.
It is the start of an addictive affair, told from the female perspective. Desperate for some hope and attention from the unresponsive Russian, Hélène loses grip on her life. She ends up hovering between debilitating desire and madness, even travelling to Moscow simply to breathe the same air that he breathes.
