They were never hungry for success, always recalcitrant, sarcastic and critical. Nineties indie-band Pavement had a dedicated following, a dramatic split and, since 2022, are back together again. In this layered meta-documentary, the band sends itself up in a fittingly lo-fi way.
Director Alex Ross Perry (Listen Up Philip, Her Smell) paints a portrait of Pavement in no less than four layers. He films the preparations for the reunion, directs an off-Broadway ‘jukebox musical’ made up of Pavement songs, works on a dramatized parody biopic of the band and films the ‘Pavement expo’, which presents a fictional image of the band from Stockton, California.
