Poison
Todd Haynes / US, 1991 / 85 min.
Three bizarre stories that play havoc with ruling ideas about gender and sexuality. Poison was controversial when released, though Todd Haynes was eventually embraced by Hollywood. Part of Looking for America: America is not one thing or another: America is Queer.

While Hollywood”s gays were still firmly in the closet, more and more LGBT characters made their appearance in indie films from the early 1990s, so that the term “New Queer Cinema” was soon coined. The name does not only refer to sexuality: “queer” emphatically stands for different, original, not to be tied down.
An outspoken example is Poison, Todd Haynes”s provocative feature film debut involving three bizarre stories that challenges prevalent notions about gender and sexuality. Poison was controversial at the time, but Haynes was eventually embraced by Hollywood: his drama Carol, about a lesbian love affair, was nominated for six Oscars.
The screening on 13 December is introduced by Hugo Emmerzael (Filmkrant). The introduction will be in Dutch.
