From 1949, writer William S. Burroughs (Junky, Naked Lunch, Cities of the Red Night) spent some time living with his wife Joan in Mexico City, where he frequented the bars, picked up young men and tried in vain to kick his heroin habit. He also fell hopelessly in love with a young American former GI and expat, who he met during one of his bar crawls.
