Royal Academy of Art: Place
Royal Academy of Art: Place
The KABK ResearchLabs (Royal Academy of Art in The Hague) will interrogate the phenomenon Place. Goal is to understand the vocation of the place. A place isn't a mere edge but a boundary that marks where things begin to show up and gather meaning.

A place creates a horizon for our understanding, like a hearth gathering a family's life. In this way, we embrace and protect the earth and become part of a comprehensive totality. We recognise that humans are an integral part of the environment, and forgetting this can only lead to alienation and environmental disruption. Belonging to a place means to have an existential foothold, in a concrete and everyday sense.
The program provides a kaleidoscopic overview of the phenomenon place. On one end of the spectrum, we find a Modernity that is characterised by the homelessness of the Non-Place. This is the world of Soviet Plattenbau and the bleak life of a dysfunctional family.
On the other end, there is a plot of land that is grown and tended by the ancestors for generations in an effort to reconcile the limitations of existence. This plot of land offers a sense of belonging and a gathering of meaning that allows us to be truly present.
