Saint Omer
Alice Diop / FR, 2022 / 122 min.
The myth of Medea, the mother who killed her own children, echoes in this true story of a female immigrant who drowned her daughter in 2013. A film which, unlike the average courtroom drama, leaves the viewer with prickly, awkward questions.
Rama, a lecturer in French literature of Senegalese origin, becomes fascinated by the trial of a mother who killed her fifteen-month-old child. She joins the other, mostly female, interested parties in the court. The perpetrator, also born in Senegal, turns out to be an intelligent, well-spoken student who is unable to give a plausible explanation for the murder. For Rama, who is expecting her first child, the case raises questions about her own difficult relationship with her mother, and about her own impending motherhood.
